US soldiers give books to Afghani families and orphans

A family services organization for soldiers in Afghanistan thinks the book is very important for children of soldiers abroad and for their families here in the states. They are purchasing many books to be sent to Afghanistan and to families in the US. Holland and Knight Charitable Foundation is paying for the books and shipping them. It is a win-win situation!

Here is a January 2005 letter regarding the process of soldiers and families receiving the books:

I work at the Command Headquarters for the 53rd Infantry Brigade of the Florida Army National Guard. I'm the Family Center Support Specialist, which means that I take care of the families of deployed soldiers. The 53rd Bde has orders to be deployed to Afghanistan this spring for 18 months. Though I can't give you exact numbers, we're expecting a very large group of soldiers to be taking part of this rotation. The mission is called ANA, short for Afghani National Army. Most of our soldiers
will be providing security in Kabul, but others will be part of embedded training teams, living with the Afghani people and training the ANA become a functional Army of their own. The camp, Camp Phoenix, where most of our soldiers will be based, is close to one of the largest orphanages in Afghanistan.

Though I'm staying behind to care for our soldiers' families, I've taken the same leadership development courses for cultural awareness
as our command staff. The staff was very excited about your book, and the unique connection that it will bring for our soldiers and the children of Afghanistan. I'm spearheading a project called Operation Backpack as a PR tool for our soldiers.  We're filling backpacks with small toiletries, school supplies, toys and your book for the soldiers to take to the children (did you know that an Afghani child
cannot attend school unless he/she owns their own pen?). The books that we have have been completed by children in New York. However,
the new books will be completed by the children of our own soldiers, the same who will be personally giving them to the Afghani children. I can think of no better way to bridge our cultures.

NEW YORKSeptember 26, 2003 – Internationally acclaimed storyteller Laura Simms new book “A Key to the Heart and Other Afghan Tales” is a collection of 6 stories, published in both Dari and English, from the Afghan oral tradition. The illustrated children's book is published by Chocolate Sauce, with writing donated by Ms. Simms. Proceeds will go to rebuilding schools in Afghanistan . The book is published in English as well as in Dari, a major Afghani language. Illustrations are by children fromElephant six New York City public schools and students from the Ghazni Province.

Afghanistan still looms in the headlines, and it is Simms' intention to instill in readers the delight of living in relation ship to diverse cultures. The book will encourage readers to explore  and come to a deeper level of understanding of the riches in Afghan culture.

The oral literature of Afghanistan is old and venerable. The tales have been saturated with generations of Sufis, Muslims, Jews, Buddhist and others’ spiritual wisdom, Simms said. The stories are for children as well as adults and are about overcoming obstacles and instilling hope.

“Sharing in the restoration and growth of Afghanistan at this time is particularly important. Our wish is that this book brings children together. Healing others is helping ourselves,” Simms said. “May these stories and wishes go into the world and gather up the hearts of children and adults everywhere in the embrace of kindness and understanding.”

Most of the funds will go to support The School of Hope to help build schools and educate girls. School of Hope is an organization started in 2000 by Afghan expatriates in the U.S. and concerned Americans living in New York City.

“Education is the tool that changes society,” School of Hope said. “It is the foundation stone for the future of Afghan people and helps maintain peace during these times of nation building.”

Simms has been a storyteller since 1969, and has been instrumental in the storytelling renaissance in America. Since September 11, she has been engaged in developing, researching and creating projects that utilize storytelling in a profoundly beneficial way. Her book Stories To Nourish the Hearts of Our Children In a Time of Crisis was created in response to the events on September 11.

“I saw the fear that spread through people unprepared for dealing with extreme emotional states and sudden change. I also saw the ceaseless compassion and brilliance of communication that ordinary people manifested in the situation. It is the impulse behind these books I am writing.”

The hardcover book lists for $15, and is available for sale at the Rubin Museum of Art, the United Nations Bookstore, through the publisher and through Laura Simms' website (see merchandise page or email us).
